Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) CA #136479; TX LMFT-S #202883Gabriela Gonzales
Hi, I’m Gaby (she/her/ella).
As the daughter of immigrants, I understand what it’s like to navigate two cultures—to live in that space of ni de aquí, ni de allá. I work with BIPOC individuals who are healing while remaining true to themselves and their values.
I come from a large family where higher education was highly valued. Yet, after achieving it, I experienced the distance that can come when you're suddenly seen as "thinking you're better than everyone else." That experience taught me that it’s possible to love your family, honor your culture, and still choose yourself. I’m living proof that you can set healthy boundaries, break generational cycles, and build a life that reflects who you are without losing where you come from.
My approach to therapy is authentic, warm, and collaborative. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and you set the pace of our work together. There is already enough shame and guilt in the world—therapy shouldn't add to it. My goal is to create a space where you feel seen, understood, and supported.
Whether this is your first time in therapy or you've struggled to find a therapist who truly "gets it," I want you to know you don't have to spend your sessions explaining the cultural nuances or experiences that have shaped you. There is something deeply validating about working with someone who understands those unspoken references and recognizes what it feels like to navigate spaces where you haven't always felt safe, accepted, or fully understood.
I incorporate a decolonizing lens into my work, recognizing that many of our struggles exist within larger systems that were never designed to support or uplift everyone equally. Together, we can explore how those experiences have impacted you while creating space for healing, empowerment, and self-compassion.
I have specialized training in treating the effects of sexual violence in both children and adults, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Problematic Sexual Behavior Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). These evidence-based approaches allow me to provide trauma treatment that is both effective and tailored to each person's unique needs.
In addition, I am trained in play therapy for children, Prepare/Enrich premarital counseling, and PACT couples therapy. I have experience working with active-duty service members and their families, and I am passionate about mentoring graduate interns and therapists in training.
As the Founder and Executive Director of Comunidad Therapy, I am committed to increasing representation in mental health, reducing barriers to quality care, and helping individuals and families heal in ways that honor their identities, cultures, and lived experiences.
